During the pandemic, TAUK set a goal to create as much new music as possible. They compiled about 20 original ideas and sent them to Kanika Moore, a powerful collaborator in various live sets at festivals such as Electric Forest, Peach Festival, and Resonance. From those songs, the group focused on 8 originals and "STFU" was a song they felt melded both styles well.
Kanika came out in January to work at TAUK's studio in Oyster Bay. For six days, Kanika stayed at TAUK keyboardist Alric Carter's house. At the time, there was a 3-year-old upstairs who decided to run, stomp, and make as much noise as possible... way too early in the morning. This was part of the song's inspiration.
